The Sloan Digital Sky Survey mapped 930,000 galaxies and 120,000 quasars from 2000 to 2008. Now you get to experience via this glorious video created by Miguel Aragon of Johns Hopkins University with Mark Subbarao of the Adler Planetarium and Alex Szalay of Johns Hopkins.
Each “snowflake” you see is a galaxy – there are apparently about 400,000 in the video. There's a bit of creative license being taken: from the perspective of “camera” the speed observer *way faster than the speed of light*. So this is more of visualization rather than a simulation.
