Help me with my Visio + PowerShell presentation at the PowerShell Summit North America 2014
Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 1:31AM I was thrilled last week to discover my proposal for the summit was accepted – the title of my presentation? ….
Visio + PowerShell = Crazy Delicious
Quick Summary: I'll be showing how you can drive Visio via my PowerShell module called VisioPS (download it here).
A rough outline for the session:
- Why this is interesting
- Overview of the VisioPS module
- Architecture
- Optimization for Interactive Sessions
- Demos of real-world scenarios and applications
- Basic Visio Automation
- Time Savers
- Diagram Analysis (Shape connectivity, reachability, shape data)
- Drawings from data
- Directed graphs / Flowcharts
- Trees
- Org-Charts
- Data Import/Export
- Reporting & Simple Graphing
- Diagrams as Document Object Models
Here’s how you can help me deliver the best presentation possible:
- What topics would you like to see?
- Would you like to see spend more time showing code or spend more time doing demos?
- What do you NOT want to see in the presentation?
- What questions must be addressed?
- Please feel free to provide any other suggestions!

I think that showing the best demos at the beginning of the session will make your public more interested in VisioPS: then, you can show them the code so they can learn how to make that possible.
I don't think many of them would be interested on the inner workings of VisioPS: PowerShell programmers are so practical, they only want to get the job done as fast as possible. Instead, a simple script that inspects AD Organizational Units to produce an Org-Chart of a company: something that they want to run after the presentation to resolve a problem that they have been unable to solve before VisioPS :)
Some ideas:
- "They already have Visio, so they might as well use it." (assuiming this is true)
- You can use pre-existing shapes or draw your own, then write "minimal" code to place stuff on a page and get a diagram. You don't have to learn a "whole canvas api" and create graphics from scratch. It's really about dropping symbols and connecting them in many cases.
- Changes can be made to visuals by editing a template/shapes without recompiling/editing code.
you explaination style is so lovely ,i real admire your way of exlpaination you had shown nice detail and i think everyone can understansd it easily...thank for share
