It Only Hurts When I Print

I just watched Your Printer is a Brat (via How-To Geek) and laughed. And then cried because it was all so too familiar. We put a man on the moon in 1969 but it’s 2010 now and we still seem to have problems reliably getting ink onto paper.

IronPython Script to Draw a Simple Calendar in Visio

This week I needed to quickly print out a calendar and although I could have used Visio’s built-in calendar shapes (which would have been both easier and produce better results)  I instead decided to use this as an opportunity to show a real-world example of python’s calendar module in use.

The output is simple: just a grid as shown below. Days that fall out of the target month are shown with muted text.

SOURCE CODE

You can download the .PY file called drawcalendarmonth.py in my Collection of IronPython scripts for Visio

IN COMPARISON TO THE BUILT-IN SHAPES

Again, Visio’s built in Calendar shapes provides much more useful output.

When you drag the Month shape into a drawing, you’ll get control over several aspects of what to show. As you can see below, it even lets you control the language to use.

Linear Layout for the Visualization of Networks by Martin Krzywinski

Martin Krzywinski has a cool new visualization algorithm for networks. The problem he’s attacking is the tangled look that networks visualizations tend to get when the size of a network gets large. The distinctive character of his layout stems from the axis-aligned placement of the network nodes.

Video of the week: Between Bears by Eran Hilleli

Work like this reminds me of what it means to be witness true talent and vision.

I love the visual style. It’s old and analog and digital at the same time and I’d love to see a full-length animated film done in this style.

Brand Consistency can kill via pancakes

Redditor CowboyPerfect brings us this troublesome image – apparently found while preparing pancakes for his family.

Straightforward analysis should instruct us that things that should be NOT be used together (especially when the consequences are life-threatening) should look very, very different.
